PHYTEC Single Board Computer modules have been optimized for insertion as an OEM subassembly into an end product. OEM implementation of a PHYTEC module frees engineers from the routine design of a microcontroller core and enables him or her to focus on the specific target application. Compare implementation of PHYTEC module to the time, labor and material cost of your internal development.

Many lower-end applications can be readily and cost-effectively handled by 8-bit microcontrollers, in particular the 8051. This processor offers the advantages of simplicity, multiple sources of controllers as well as hardware and software development tools, and a standard instruction set. PHYTEC Single Board Computers enable quick and economic entry into 8-bit embedded developments.

16-bit microcontrollers offer a scalable upgrade from 8-bit embedded processors. In addition to twice the bandwidth of 8-bit chips, these devices integrate a larger number of peripheral functions on-chip and provide faster instruction execution and interrupt response. High-end 16-bit processors offer up to 76 I/O lines and 16 MB linear address space. PHYTEC provides board-support of a wide range of 16-bit embedded controllers.

Driven by the performance and cost sensitive PC industry, embedded x86 and PowerPC processors provide price/performance ratios matched by few other high-end embedded architectures. Both controller families also leverage the desktop learning curve given familiarity of these processors and development tools to programmers and systems developers. PHYTEC also provides new board-level support of high-performance ARM core (ARM7TDMI, XScale) devices.

|
The phyCORE is a new generation PHYTEC insert-ready Single Board Computer module. Like its mini-,micro- and nanoMODUL predecessors, the phyCORE achieves its small size through modern SMD technology, integrates all core elements of a microcontroller system on a sub-miniature board and is designed in a manner that ensures its easy expansion and embedding in peripheral hardware developments. The primary characteristics of this new generation insert-ready Single Board Computer module are its enhanced EMI protection and small form factor.

PHYTEC Development Boards are fully equipped with all mechanical and electrical components necessary for the speedy and secure implementation and subsequent programming of PHYTEC Single Board Computer modules. Simple configuration of jumper headers readies the Development Boards' connectivity to any compatible PHYTEC SBC module, which plug onto receptacle footprints on the target Development Board. Interface signals (RS-232, RS-485, CAN, Ethernet, BDM/JTAG) are routed from the controller and applicable transceivers to break-out pins on the module. When mounted on the Development Board, these signals are, in turn, broken out from the module to DB-9, RJ-45 and other applicable connectors on the Development Board. This enables easy access to primary communication signals and supports programming and debugging of user code.

PHYTEC Development Boards featuring an Expansion Bus take the PHYTEC modular concept one step further. Just as PHYTEC Development Boards break-out all applicable signals from the underlying Single Board Computer module, the Expansion Bus breaks out all applicable signals from the underlying Single Board Computer module to high-density Molex 1x160-pin or 2x160-pin connectors on the Development Board. Add-On Hardware connects to all applicable Development Boards that offer an Expansion Bus.

The kitCON is a dedicated Evaluation Board. All hardware required for immediate start-up us on-board, including DB-9 connectors (configurable as RS-232, RS-485 and CAN interfaces) and power connectors, are on-board. In essence, the kitCON integrates a PHYTEC stand-alone, insert-ready Single Board Computer module and a Development Board on a single PCB. PHYTEC kitCONs are featured in Starter Kits from such manufacturers as Infineon and Silicon Storage Technologies (SST).

PHYTEC Rapid Development Kits enable immediate and successful start-up of the entire line of 8-, 16- and 32-bit insert-ready phyCORE Single Board Computers. Each kit contains a phyCORE module mounted on a Development Board that features all hardware needed for immediate power-up of the module; including DB-9 nodes (configurable as RS-232 and/or RS-485/CAN interfaces), power connectors and a wire wrap field for easy integration of user-designed peripheral hardware/circuitry. The PHYTEC Spectrum CD-ROM provides complete electronic documentation and evaluation software development tools to accompany the hardware. Spectrum's installation wizard allows users to select applicable software development tools (from Keil, TASKING and Metrowerks), example programs, complete electronic documentation and PHYTEC FlashTools for installation to a project folder on a host-PC.

As PHYTEC micro-, mini-, nano- and phyCORE modules are designed for implementation in OEM products, these insert-ready modules sometimes do not meet the emulation and test requirements of our OEM customers. With the exception of controllers available in PLCC-packaging or offering JTAG connectivity, connectivity to an emulator requires advanced sockets and/or supplemental connectors that are not practical - due to EMI, mechanical stability and size constraints - to include on Single Board Computer module subassemblies designed for OEM use. PHYTEC's solution is to provide 100% pin- and functionality-compatible "debug" module counterparts to each OEM module that does not offer PLCC or JTAG interface debug connectivity.
